[ Story 1 - Jeff Pittman, 18 ] |
Catalin F., 30, catyfk@yahoo.com
I started to have problems with my ears from age of 5. Numerous infections and otitis occurs at my left ear. After many treatments the results was temporary and infections reappear. Now at 30, i made the surgery for removal of cholesteatoma two months ago which seems to be there from 10-15 years. At time of surgery was found a large cholesteatoma located in attic portion of middle ear. The c-toma eroded my incus so in this time hearing level down to 70% and eroded my lateral semicircular canal with a fistula that determine a mild vertigo. After surgery first 10-12 days was painfull enough in more locations (behind ear where was made an incision to remove c-toma, and in ear where the attic was reconstructed and my tragal cartigale of external ear where an dissection was performed to use a piece of it to repair erosions. During this period i had vertigo which was persistent for 3-4 weeks. My mouth has a metallic taste but this was minor and after 6 weeks this disappear. The tinnitus appear after surgery and was pregnant and pulsatile for 3 weeks. The surgery was for 3 hours and i stayied a night at clinic. Now i'm fine, with little pains at incision behind ear and with level of hearing same as before surgery or even improved.I'm waiting for next postoperative control to make an audiogram. The repair of ossicles was made temporary to allow maintain hearing level and depend on what will be the result of audiogram will be decided if final repair of ossicles is necessary at second surgery for revision of cavity. I hope after second look the c-toma not reoccur because is not desirable to make an ample third surgery or even fourth. It is very important to resolve nasal problems to have a good respiration otherwise is a chance to a new retraction of tympanic membrane to appear and conduct to a new c-toma. I've made a septoplasty before the surgery for c-toma at indication of my MD. As a note, all treatments before surgery of c-toma was performed at various doctors that was unable to conduct me to a prevention of c-toma. So I decided to find a MD to be specialized on otologic surgery and hopefully i found one with more experiences in this problems, in my country. The second look surgery will be made at 14 months later and is not ample as first so i hope to be fine quickly. At right ear a have a retraction pocket of eardrum due to nasal problems before septoplasty but the ear is clean, no infections and does envolve to c-toma, hearing is normal so no surgery is necessary at this moment.
