my son was 6mths old when we had the first signs something was wrong with his right ear. He had gromets put in both ears to help with the draining of the fluid. At 10mths of age he had his adenoids out and at 18 months and 4 operations later i changes specialists. This new specialist diagnosed "congenital cholesteatoma". He had an emergency operation and had also developed menangitis. Many hours later i was able to see him. After 2 weeks i was able to bring him home. He had numerous operations in years to follow including more grommets, ear reconstruction, rebuilding of reconstruction (as the first collapsed) etc. We changed hospitals when he was 16 as he was no longer able to visit the childrens hospital. We thought we would get great treatment at the royal hospital, but 3 visits later they still werent able to get his history file from the previous hospital. In the 3 visits however we were told 3 different stories. 1. He is fine now 2. Ear needs total reconstruction. 3. Looks serious, needs an operation, but they never followed up. My son is now 21 and still suffering. He is back and forths to the doctors weekly with unusual feelings in both ears. He has another specialist app. in a months time, so lets see how we go this time. Maybe we will get some satisfation. His hearing has suffered dramatically, but not one doctor we have been to see, seems to care. Does anyone else feel they are getting a rough time with this "disease". Or is it the australian health system.
