Ollie F., 14
As a baby my parents where always taking me to the dotors with high temperatures which were difficult to get down. my GP always put it down to a virus no sign of infection in my ears. Then i had an infection that perforated my ear drum. my GP gave me some antibiotics and ear drops and told my parents to bring me back in week if it did not clear up. It did not so my mum took me back to the doctors then he refered me to an ENT consultant. The consultant took 1 look in my left ear and could see a massive bulge behind my eardrum. The next step was to have a CT scan this confirmed cholesteatoma. This meant i had to have a mastoidectomy. I was 3 and a half the surgery took 4 and a half hours. The surgeon came to see my parents he said that i had congenitial cholesteatoma and it was the worst case he had ever seen in a child of my age and that i had been living on a time bomb. I had lost most of my hearing in that ear but i was lucky my right ear was perfect. I have had regular visits for clean outs under anasethetic and awake in the outpatient clinic. My ENT surgeons have been great. I have suffered numerous infections disruption from school facial paralysis at one point due to infection. I have have 2 lots of reconstructive surgery both major ops the first one failed, the second, closure of the cavity seems to be sound bu the reconstruction of the ear drum has retracted so i am waiting for more surgery to reconstruct and give me better hearing . My dream career is to be a pilot.
