Nikki C., 15
I've had problems with my ears, ever since I was a little baby. I was constantly getting ear infections and having drainage problems. I probably couldn't even tell you how many times my doctors over the years have put tubes in my ears to help with the drainage, but it never seemed to work. Ever since the beginning, my ear problems were mis-diagnosed. They finally figured out that it was cholesteatoma when I was about six years old, in the first grade. That was when I had my first surgery, to remove it. The doctors did not get it all out, it took them several operations and years to get rid of it all. Over the next few years I had at least one surgery to remove the cholesteatoma that had returned every year. It took them about five years to get it all out!! In one of my many surgeries the put in prostesis, which were supposed to immitate the hearing bones that the cholesteatoma had damaged over the years. However, the prostesis had no effect on helping my hearing. When I was about ten I was referred to Lucille Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford in Palo Alto. I had my two surgeries, one being my final surgery where they finally got the cholesteatoma all out. It took five years but with the help of my three doctors, I finally got rid of it!! But it still left its scars. To this day, I have severe hearing loss in my left ear, and have to wear a hearing aide. But at least they got it out before it did any more damage!!
