Pam M, 44
wow, I am astounded to read these stories of other people who have gone through the same thing that I've dealt with for the past 38 years. I was very young, 6 or so, when I started having ear infections. These were always treated with antibiotics, warm sweet oil, and lots of sleepless nights with my head on my special pillow in my mama's lap. I never went to an ear dr. until around the age of 10. This so called ear Dr. cleaned my ear with a water irrigation that hurt so much that, even as a child, I refused to go back. Finally, in about 1972, my medical dr. was treating me for a sore throat or something, and advised my mom that I had a severe ear infection and was going to refer me to that same ear Dr. I had seen before. My mom refused and he then referred me to Dr. Robert T. Stone in Wilson, NC. He immediately said I needed surgery and I've had 4 mastoidectiomies over the years. I've never been able to get water in my right ear, and to this day, suffer with ear aches daily. The surgeries that Dr. Stone did left my ear cavity open, which I was informed today by another ear/nose/throat specialist, this was good, because he can see deep into my ear cavity to see if there is recurrent cholesteatomas. Dr. Stone had always called them skin balls, and until today I didn't know the medical term for my problem. I have total deafness in my right ear, because the cholesteatoma was so extensive by the time I started seeing Dr. Stone, the bones were destroyed. Last year, I was diagnosed with a staph infection in my ear and went through 5 months of different antibiotics, but to no avail. I have ringing in my right ear, and 3 weeks ago, began to have a humming, throbbing sensation in the right side of my head. That has finally eased off. I really have no encouraging words for anyone that has cholesteatomas, because I haven't seen much improvement in technology or advancement in treatment in the past 38 years. i don't fault Dr. Stone for this, because he was my God-send. I panicked when he said I needed to be referred to another Dr. because he was getting close to retirement, and if I needed more surgery, he couldn't do it.
