Matt K., 21

I woke up 1 day 3 months after my 21st birthday with severe loss of hearing in my left ear - i thought it was from being yelled in the ear with a megaphone the day before. 2 days later i woke up and the left side of my face was paralised. The docs didnt know what it was and gave me antibiotics and steriods , that reduced the inflation and my face got gradually better but not perfect. Over the next few weeks I had many more doc appointments eventally leading up to an MIR scan and specialist appointment. He said i have an extensive c-toma and it must be removed asap (much longer and it would of destroyed my facial nerve completly) - he said there is risk of losing my hearing and the nerve in the op if the tumor is too extensive. I had my operation April 11th 2006 (cant remember exact day), The tumor had worked its way too far in so he had to remove my inner ear which resulted in complete loss of hearing in my left ear and lose of balance (this is regained over afew weeks and months). I am at the moment recovering and regaining my balance - the facial nerve was saved but is very damaged and inflamed because the tumor was enveloping it and had to be carefully extracted around it - my nerve will possibly heal slowely over time but at the moment my smile is smilty crooked. My ear has been filled up with fat from my stomach so there is no hole there anymore and i think no chance for re openign it and regaining the hearing in a future operation.Aparently I have had this tumor since birth and had slowely been growing over time, I was very lucky for it to suddenly affect me, otherwise I would never of discovered it and it would of eroded into my brain and killed me.My advice to anyone with this is to not let it get you down, theres millions of other people in the world less fortunate than you, and in seriosness, as long as it hasnt eroded your brain casing then your alot better off than others with mailgnant tumors etc.Oh and get a great surgeon, In New Zealand we only had 4 specialists but that doesnt mean they dont know what they were doing, my one was brilliant and managed to save the facial nerve.
