Mason

Mason is a 7 year old great little boy. As a child he had chronic otitis media as well as tubes put in ears. When he was 5 years old he had severe chronic ear infections. The Doctor said he had a hole in his eardrum and if it did not heal he would need to see a specialist, the next visit he said it healed. This went on for 3 months until my tuff little boy was screaming in constant pain. He had thick discharge and blood coming out of his ear. His school teacher called me in a panic to pick him up from school. For 3 months I took him into the Doctor and requested a specialist. The Doctor did not deem it necessary and kept putting him on more medication and ear drops and codine. He was rushed to the Urgent care, the Doctor said his infection was to the point of admitting him to the hospital and putting him on morphine. I took him the next day and the Doctor told me his eardrum just popped and cleared up that was his pain he will be better now. I argued with him explaining my son never cries and is very tough. At this point he had NO voice left from crying and screaming. However, I trusted my Doctor and went home. The next day I was in the Doctor again. He tried to tell me it was just allergies and he was clogged up. He gave him salt spray for his ears more medicine and more codine. This time my insurance denied my son's codine because he was prescribed too much in a short amount of time. After 16 visits in three months I refused to leave the Doctors office until he gave me a referral to a specialist. Before I knew it we were rushing CT scans and he had a exploratory surgery. His cholesteatoma was removed shortly after. The Doctor said it was one of the biggest he had seen in quite some time and we were lucky not to leave it go much longer. After 4 1/2 hours he was out of the extensive surgery. He now has 80% hearing loss and is in speech class and special tutoring for all of his missed school. His next surgery is scheduled for March to be sure all of the tumor was removed and try to do the repair work. If anybody has any information on how extensive or painful the second surgery is I would appreciate it, as well as the recovery time. As a parent you should ALWAYS trust your instinct and not the Doctor. I believe my son would have been better of if I would have been more persistent.
