Lisa G

I was first diagnosed 14 years ago, but I really didn't know anything about this disease. I didn't have the surgery because I didn't have the money or insurance. Finally 14 years later I had to have it done, the symptoms were making itself known and my hearing was continuing to get considerably worse. The reason for my disease is due to improper Eustachian tube functioning. I had a tympanoplasty on the left and right ear. So here's my story: My left eardrum had retracted and the disease was extensive . I had approximately 70 percent hearing loss. My surgeon eradicated all of the disease and performed reconstructive surgery all in one step. That was done in October of 2002, so far the disease hasn't returned and my hearing has improved considerably. High frequency's are almost normal. My right eardrum had retracted as far back to the mastoid bone and the disease was just starting. I had a hearing test after the left ear healed that showed a definite improvement but my right ear was failing fast. I had surgery on my right ear March 2003, with a little surprise to my surgeon, (unrelated to the Cholesteatoma) my surgeon found that 2 of my 3 hearing bones were fixated, they didn't move at all, so he reconstructed those bones repaired the eardrum and it has only been 3 weeks since surgery and my hearing is improving quickly. I think I have an excellent surgeon I am very pleased with the care he has given me. If anyone is around this area and needs an excellent Otolaryngologist his name is DR. RICHARD MOSS, Jasper IN. Medical Arts Building. He is a visiting specialist in Paoli IN also. I highly recommend him. Good Luck to all of you who have this disease or dealing with a family member who has it. I feel very fortunate compared to most. My outcome has been excellent. Thanks to a great surgeon and the excellent care I received.
