Samantha B.

I was first diagnosed with cholesteatoma about 1 month ago when I had started my career in the Army! They asked me to do an audio test. I was worried about this as I had taken them before and failed! As I predicted I failed so the medical staff checked my ears which said I had infections in both ears but as it was really bad they would send me to a ENT specialist in Winchester, which said I had cholesteatoma and would need an operation in my left ear. Three days later I returned back to the hospital to undertook me for surgery. It lasted for about 2-3 hours. After I woke the pain was unbearable but I was allowed back to my training barracks later that night. But due to the conditions I had to stay over at the medical center there so they could keep and eye on me. After I was sent home for 2 weeks sick leave on the 19th I returned to the hospital to have the packing removed from my left ear and to see if I was clear. But after another audio test it showed my hearing still wasn't 100% and that I would have to have a CT scan to see which ear was the worse and then have 2 more operations, one on each ear. I have been very grateful to the army for helping me and diagnosing my problem but the fact that my career has now ended is heart breaking. I will go back to college and carry on with my life having reviews on my ears hoping for it not to return. I wish anyone else with cholesteatoma all the best and good luck just keep going and don't let it put you down!
