Cholesteatomas really come from two different origins. The
first one, as you may expect, is from an infection. In many cases
a retrated ear drum. The second one, somewhat less common, is the
congenital cholesteatoma. This is where the patient is born with
the cholesteatoma. In both case, surgery is the only way to
remove the cholesteatoma.
